compact and repair options

I have recently changed to Access 2007, and whenever I compact and repair a
database it actualyl creates a new file. Is there any way to stop this
happening? Should it happen? I always have a backup anyway, it;s just that I
would like to be able to set the 'compact on close' option to yes so that
even in my absense the file structure won't grow too big.

The database is saved in 2003 format if that makes a difference as a few
people in the company are still using 2003.

This didn't happen with Access 2003 on the same database.

Check where you are compacting from and to, and whether you're using Vista
or not. Vista limits much of what you can do.

When Access compacts a database what it actually is doing is:

1. Create a new empty database and name it db1 (2 ... 3, etc)
2. Copy all the records into the new database.
3. Create the indexes, and check the integrity.
4. Delete the old database
5. Rename the new database to the old name.

Somewhere in the process between 3 and 5, something is going wrong, and
Access cannot delete and rename the files.

Thanks for the reply, from what you siad I have know figured what its doing,
but I still need to find why...It appears that any computer we have that's
using thiis database through a mapped network drive is having this problem.
However, i have just logged onto the server and accessed it through the local
drive and it works fine with no new files. It must be a security setting
somewhere. We are using XP with office 2007, so any help on this new problem
would be appreciated.

Do the users have DELETE right to the folder where the database resides? If
they don't, they wouldn't be able to delete the old database after
compacting.

I can delete the files it generates in through explorer, so I presume
everyone has delete rights to that folder. When i get back into the office I
will try doing the same thing but logged in as an administrator!

any other ideas?

I have logged in as an administrator but it does the same thing as before -
i.e it generates a new file and doesn't finish the compact and repair
process. There is no other software that has this problem with deleting
files etc, including Access 2003. Is there any security settings in 2007
that could be causing this?

i have the same problem with you.

i find the compacted database cannot be renamed and deleted when the
database is located in a network drive.
