Compact and Repair

Hi,

Sorry if this has been cover zillon times before. I just can't find the
post.

I am using Access 2003. I am trying to "Compact and Repair" my MDB file.
The problem is that it always gives me an error message saying:

"Cannot open database <database>. It may not be a database that your
application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt.".

EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! If I click "Compact and Repair" the second time, it
will start to compact without any error anymore.

any idea?

There are types of corruption which Compact and Repair can't fix. I'd
(strongly!) suggest MAKING A BACKUP - right now. If you already have a backup
keep it in a safe place and make *another* backup.

Then create a new, empty database and use File... Get External Data... Import
to import everything from this database. Try compacting this new database. If
you get the same error, you may have imported some corrupt object (a table
with a memo field, or a form with some damaged code, or some other corrupted
object) and you'll need to delete this new database, and import objects one at
a time until you identify the damaged one.
