I develop and maintain several Access 2003 databases and about a week
ago all the mdb front ends started crashing Access after compacting on
closing. The problem doesn't occur with the compiled mde front ends
though.
Posts about this type of problem indicated they were often related to
vba references. By trial and error I found that the crashes only
occured in mdbs that reference mda or mde files.
I can reproduce this problem with a blank mdb, opening the vba ide and
setting a reference to a mda or mde file; for example, utility.mda in
the OFFICE11 folder. You also need to have at least one empty module
compiled and saved. Set 'Compact on close' and then close the mdb.
I've tried this on two PCs running Office 2003 SP2 on XP SP2 Home and
Pro. It may just have been coincidence but the problem started shortly
after the Office 2003 SP2 update was installed.
Can anyone reproduce this problem or suggest a fix or workaround?
