compacting autonumber field

In my Autonumber fileds there some gaps between numbers - probably because
of deleted records - how do I compact the table? The database
utility-compact does not do this

Once used, an AutoNumber value is not used again, and the Compact/Repair
utility was not designed nor intended to restore them.

If you must reset your AutoNumber values, do a search at
http://groups.google.com using reset autonumber field as a search
criterion. You will get at least 2000 'hits' on the subject.

Cheryl is correct. I would add that you should consider not ever showing the
autonumber to users so it doesn't make any difference what an autonumber
value contains. I never use the autonumber for any reason other than to
create a unique identifier for a record.
