Compatability issues between office 2004 and 2008

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

Hi. We have a few computers on a local network. The host computer we have is running on Tiger OS. The other computers are Leopard (not sure if that makes a difference). we didn't seem to have nearly as many problems before I upgraded my computer to Office 2008.

The main problems we are having seem to be permissions based. If I create a document on my computer and store it in the appropriate folder, stored on the host computer, the people operating either of the other 2 computers, one of which is the host computer, can not open it, or it is read only. As soon as they tell me they can't a document that I own, I change the permissions on my computer (with office 2008) to allow everybody access and read and write privilages. Then I can't even get into the folder that contains the document. A little red (looks like a do not enter sign) appears on the folder. The other computers can open it now, but I can't access it any longer.

I doubt i did a good job explaining my problem, but let me know if I need to elaborate anywhere.

Thanks in advance. Rob

This looks like either an AppleTalk or Unix UID problem.

See if anything here helps:

This could be a few different things but what catches my eye is "running
Tiger OS".

First, you didn't say "Mac OS X 10.4 Server". Are you using a Mac
workstation for file sharing? That's not necessarily wrong but
workstations aren't necessarily configured out-of-the-box to be servers.

By default, Mac OS X 10.4 (workstation) does not have Access Control
Lists (ACLs) enabled. That means it's using the old style Owner, Group
and Everyone for permissions. Mac OS X 10.5 (workstation) uses *only*
ACLs. This could be part of your permissions problem.

Second, Mac OS X Server can be set to not allow ownership of files by
those who create the files. That's a good thing because you want
ownership to belong to one entity (an account on the server) but you
want read or read/write permissions for everyone else. This can be
adjusted on a workstation acting as a server by setting the proper umask
on the shared folder. It's a pain to do if you're not sure what you're
doing.

If you are indeed using a workstation as a Mac then by all means invest
in the server version of Mac OS X. If you have 10 or fewer Macs
connecting then you can get the $499.00 version.

Hope this helps!
