Instead of underlining spaces, use a tab with an underline leader or an
underlined tab. Also, Word will underline spaces if the last underlined one
is a nonbreak space (Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar), but you'll have to add a regular
space or line/paragraph break after it. For more, see

Whenever I open a document in Word XP, whether it is from an older version
of Word or from WP 5.1 dos (yes, it is still used by some in my office),
signature lines are missing. I can insert them by going to TOols,
Compatability and checking the box on Draw underline on trailing Space.
Even if I set this as default, the next time I open the document, the same
thing occurs. It has become a real hassle. We just upgraded our machines
to XP OS & XP office standard.
