Compatibility Options Don't Work

Geoffrey Odhner

I'm running Office 2004 on a Macintosh Mini Intel Core Duo, and when I
tried to run the compatibility check it had been working until today.
Now, though, it tells me "1. Word 6.0/95 compatibility options are set"
and then says about that "The compatibility options for this document
are set to Word 6.0/95, which may cause lines to break differently than
the author intended. To ensure that this document looks the same on
computers running Word 97 or later, change the compatibility options to
Microsoft Word 2000-2004 and X in the _Preferences dialog box_." I went
to the Preferences dialog box, selected Microsoft Word 2000-2004 and X,
clicked OK, then saved the document, then in the Compatibility Report
window again pressed Recheck Document, and again it showed the same
results. Going back to the Preferences dialog box, I found that the
setting had changed to Custom! Exiting Word and reloading the document
did not help. Can anyone shed light on this problem?

Thanks

Hi Geoff:

Make sure that the Format of the file is Word Document (check by File>Save
As and look in the Format field). If the file format is Word 6/95, the
compatibility options will be set that way each time the document opens.

Otherwise it's a corrupt document: Carefully copy all EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark, and paste into a new blank document then save under a new
file name.

Cheers
