Compatibility Pack 2007 Errors with 2003

I have recently downloaded the Compatibility pack on Windows XP running
Office Pro 2003. As a test I created a simple PPTX document from another
computer running Vista and Office 2007. When I tried to open the file on XP
with Office 2003 it doesn't even recognise the file format and comes up with
the error "The converter failed to save the file". I have checked that the
system has the latest updates. Am I missing something. My understanding was
that the compatibility pack allows earlier versions of PowerPoint to open
PPT2007 file formats. I don't want to have to convert files from PPT2007 to
earlier versions using SaveAs etc.

Also, which version of Office 2007 is on the Vista system? Is it B2TR or is
it RTM?

You can't mix the beta version of Office with the RTM version of the
compatibility pack and vice-versa.

PowerPoint 2007 Beta 12.0.4017.1005

I tried to download and install the earlier beta version o2007cnv.exe but it
had the same issue.

When and where did you download the compatibility pack? I ask because there
was at least one beta version of the pack, and it could be causing the
problem you're seeing.

Also, which version of Office 2007 is on the Vista system? Is it B2TR or is
it RTM?

You can't mix the beta version of Office with the RTM version of the
compatibility pack and vice-versa.

You are using Beta 2, not Beta 2 Technical Refresh (B2TR) or the final
version (RTM).

I can't remember if there was a compatibility pack with B2 or not, but I'm
sure the problem is the mixmatched versions. So you need to install Office
B2TR and use the beta version of the compatibility pack.

From the version numbers, PPT is B2 and the compatibility pack is RTM.
That combination should *never* be installed on the same computer.
But it seems to me that this isn't what the OP did. I think he made
files in B2 and is trying to open them on another computer with the RTM
compatibility pack. That wouldn't work.
It might work if the files are B2TR, but: I haven't tested this myself,
but from what I have read from users, the RTM compatibility pack won't
open any files created with a beta version.
