Compatibility Pack problems.

Hi.
I am having problems with the compatibility pack.

It always opens the docx(and the other office 2007 file formats) documents
with the Open XML Converter.

I need it to open the documents directly in the Office 2003 applications.
And the function "Open With" is not an option because I need to make the
changes in GPO or in regedit, because of the structure of our network.

I'm not sure I'm following you on this. When a Word 2003 app tries to open a Word 2007 document it hands the task over to the XML
Converter to pull the document into Word 2003 in a form that Word 2003 understands.
Word 2003 on its own has no ability to work with Word 2007's Open XML document formats.

If you turn on [x] Confirm Conversions at open in Word 2003's
Tools=>Options=>General
and open a .docx document you should get a popup asking you to confirm you want to convert the 2007 format file.

The problem accures when i doubleclick a docx document. When i do that it is
the Open XML converter that opens, and the only possibility i have in the XML
converter is to save the document in the "old" doc format.

It is in this situation that i need to find a way to avoid docx documents to
open with the XML converter.

And the solution has to be somthing i can do in GPO or regedit, because of
the whay the network is constructed.

Hi Cheeses,

I'm still not clear on the scenario you're trying to work.

The MS Office 2007 compatibility pack is for versions of Windows Office 2000 through 2003. For Word 2007 documents in that
environment the program that runs is the WordConv.exe program to make the document available to the earlier version of Word.

The 'Open XML Converter' is the name that Office:mac uses for its similar functionality on that platform. You can't open a docx file
in an older version of Word without running the converter that the compatibility pack provides.

Did you try the steps in the previous message?

Are the file associations for .docx files set for MS Word 2003, if so then Word should start, and in turn call the Compatibility
pack when it 'sees' a Word 2007 document.

Hi Bob
se scenario is that when i doublclick a docx file it opens with the Open XML
converter and the only possibilities that i have is to save file as .doc.....

It is here that i want the docx file to open directly into Word, instead of
the converter program.

If i right click on a docx file and choose open with, i have the options to
open the file with the Open XML converter and Word. but that solution is not
usefull in this situation. It needs to open directly into Word.

When I right click the docx file and choose open with Word it converts the
file before displaying the content, without opening into the Open XML
converter.

I hope this explains the problem better.

And yes i tried the solution you described, and it didn't work.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Cheeses,

Are you working WinXP or in Vista and is this an Admin account?

If you turn on the 'Confirm Conversion at Open' choice in Word 2003 and then use File=>Open to open a .docx file and get a popup
dialog in Word asking you to confirm that it is a Word 2007 file type then it would appear that either the .docx file is corrupted
or an old version, or that either the Word 2003 or Office Compatibility pack has an installation problem (assuming it's not running
into a conflict with a 3rd party Word add-in).

When you doubleclick a .docx file what dialog name are you seeing?

Hi Bob
I am using WinXP and yes I am using an admin account.

I just tried to reinstall the compatibility pack, and now it's working as it
should. (I don't get it cause I have reinstalled the package several times
with the same result, but never mind, i'm just glad it's working now)

so thank you for the help.
