When I run compatibility checker, it says the format i am using is word 6.0/95 and i need to change the preference to word 2000-2004 and x. When I look in my preferences, it says I already have 2000-2004 and x checked but the problem keeps happenng. When I burned the file to a disc, word 2003 on my windows machine says there is a compatibility problem and one or more files must be corrupt. Someone please help me fix this! I need to have this paper on a disc for school!

OK, this is two separate problems.

1) You are saving the file as .docx and the school has not applied the
update needed to Word 2003. You would get the same error from a Word 2007
..docx file. There is a file missing, but it's not missing from your disk,
it's missing from Word 2003 on the PC :)

Until the System Administrator at school gets their act together, you need
to save the file as .doc (the old format).

2) The "compatibility options" issue has two parts. Part 1 happens if the
file you are working on was started by an old version of Word. Various
options are set in Word 2008 to maintain visual compatibility with the older
version of Word.

Go to Preferences>Compatibility and set "Word 2007/2008" as the
compatibility settings. Then save the document to write the changes back to
the file.

The second part of the issue is that when you save the file as old-format,
Word will show that it is in "Compatibility Mode". It restricts the range
of things it enables you to create in such a file, because the old file
format won't support them.

That issue is not worth worrying about. You can just ignore it. There is
no point in including the new objects in the file until you move to Word
2007 on the PC, because Word 2003 can't edit them.

So the only thing you need to do is reset the compatibility options to the
"latest" and learn to ignore the warning about the old file format.

Hope this helps
