Compile Error in Excel

I am running Office 2003 SP1. When I open or close an excel spreadsheet I get
the following dialogue box - "compile error in hidden module A protected
module can't be displayed. This error has the following cause and solution"
Help says:

There is a compilation error in the code of the specified module, but it
can't be displayed because the project is protected.
Unprotect the project, and then run the code again to view the error.

For additional information, select the item in question and press F1(in
Windows) or HELP (on the Macintosh).


I do not understand this - can anyone help?
