% complete & actual finish date

San

I have created project with a phase having about 100 sub-tasks. I tried to
track the actual start and actual finish of each task. However, it's only 2
tasks with 100% complete, the % complete of the phase was 23%. I noticed that
the % complete did change if different actual finish date was input. In
particularly, this actual finish date was much longer than the baseline
finish date. Before this task was completed, % of complete was only 1%

Was this "% complete" indicate the correct % complete of the overall project ?
Or should I use "% work complete" instead ? Can you explan more on the "%
work complete" ? thanks.

San,

Good question.

Here are my thoughts.

% complete in reality is % duration complete
i.e. If total duration is 100 days for summary task and if there is only one
sub task with 100% complete which is 10 days long it will calculate %
complete as 10/100 = 10% complete.

So when you change the Actual finish date which is not its finish date then
you actually change the duration on that task and actual finish date
automatically marks the task 100%, so due to this fact the numerator value
increases or decreases and hence the % complete increases or decreases.

Work % complete on the other hand = amount of work hrs completed / Total
work hrs. Where work is mainly the amount of effort in hours and is
calculated when you assign a resource on that task.

It is also related to duration in this manner
Duration X Units (Assignment) = Work h

I will recommend you to take this free training from MS.
