% Complete and Actual Time

We want to record time using the percent complete and remaining work method.
The necessary changes were made and I can enter percent complete and
remaining hours in PWA.

Knowing that you also need to record actual start and actual finish
(otherwise Server thinks that the tasks start and end on time) I added actual
start and actual finish to the PWA task view. The fields appear but are
closed to update. This makes sense because this is about an individual
resources time. Others may also be working on the task and have their own
start and end dates.

I added actual start and end dates to the project plan. The project plan
had no problem with adding the fields and entering data but when I went back
to PWA, these fields remained empty. Are these fields for the PM’s eyes
only? Is it unreasonable to expect that these fields appear in PWA and be
populated from the project plan? Is the solution to set up PWA to handle
percent complete and remaining work and track the project start and end date
in the project plan only?

I assume you used Project > Tools > Customize > Published Fields to add
Actual Start and Actual Finish? If so, did you then republish the
project schedule to push those fields out to the timesheets? It sounds
like perhaps you didn't.

Also, for your info, the Actual Finish will automatically populate with
the date that the task is moved to 100% Work Complete.

Hello,
If think that the tracking method "Hours of work done per day or per week"
would be better for your purpose.
Anyway, if you entered Actual dates in Project Pro, you have to publish the
new data :
Collaborate / Publish / Republish Assignments / Overwrite actual work
entered by resources

We did publish the project. The fields do appear on the time sheet.
When 100% is entered actual finished date is not updated.

Thank You for your responses.

Publishing the project is not enough. To unlock the Actual Start and Actual
Finish fields for editing in the PWA timesheet, you must open the project
and do the following:

1. Click Collaborate - Publish - Republish Assignments
2. Select the "Overwrite actual work entered by resources" option
3. Click OK

Hope this helps.

Dale,

We did as you said, but it still does not work. We don't need to allow the
user to edit the Actual Start or Finish date, just to be able to see it as it
was entered in Project.

Thank you for your response.

mj,

Did you really checked the box: "Overwrite actual work entered by
resources"?
