Complex ERD - How to show entities without attributes

E

Ed Prochak

I am trying to reverse engineer a database. No serious problems there but I
want to simplify the diagram. There are many large entities (many attributes,
e.g. one is 27 inches long using 10point font). So I would like to have the
diagram show only the entities. Is this possible?

I am using VISIO Professional 2003 (SP3)

Yes, there are several options to help you manage the amount of info
displayed. Look under the Database menu, Options, Document, and select the
Table tab. In the Display section you can choose whether or not to display
the Primary Keys, Foreign keys, Indexes, Non-Keys, etc. The one I like to
turn off most often is Non-Keys, so that I can still see all keys and
indexes.

Note that depending on the number of entities currently placed on the page,
it may take several seconds for the page to be freshly rendered based on
your choices. And that the choice is across the whole document, no matter
which page is currently displayed. But the setting is stored in the
document, so you can have different settings for different diagrams.

There are many interesting options available - you can add datatypes
(physical or conceptual), Relationship verbs, change notation style, etc.
Hope that helps!
