Complex HTML error

M

Mark Licata

The FAQ describes my problem to a T:

4) Entourage X crashes when trying to open Complex HTML Messages.

Drag Macintosh
HD/Users/<ProblematicUser>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfig.plis
t and com.microsoft.explorer.plist to the Desktop. Re-launch Entourage, open
a complex HTML message, and see if you experience another crash. If you do
crash, move the Internet Preferences files back. If you don't, you can trash
the Internet Preferences files.

I did all that and it still crashes. I'm a big fan of plain text email, but
sometimes you need to view complex HTML - like yesterday when a client sent
forwarded my airline flight info.

Is there a fix or is it just too bad for me?

No help with this?

Be aware that I just registered 2 of Scriptbuilders most popular scripts
(Sync Entourage-iCal , and Sync Entourage-Address PANTHER) with kagi. They
work super and I'll be adding a version tracker comment later today. 4
stars - promise. (It would be 5 if you just made it one product)

So I support your work and should not be classified as a troll. I'm just
looking for advice on this issue. It's quite annoying.

Seems to me in Entourage X you could enable complex HTML viewing with
network access turned off. Now it looks like it's all or nothing. The rest
of the Office 2004 suite is working great so far.

Anyone.

Mark,

You seem to be a little confused here. I personally make those two scripts.
Thank you very much for supporting them and I'm glad you like them. But they
don't belong to anyone else here, and I don't own this newsgroup. This is a
public newsgroup set up by Microsoft on a news server. Everyone here
(including me) is just a user like you. Some of us volunteer our time to
help other users when we can. You seem to be accusing everyone who comes
here of both ignoring you and somehow also being responsible for my scripts?
Or is this all directed at me alone, for some reason? I don't understand.
So I support your work and should not be classified as a troll. I'm just

Whoa! Who's accusing you of being a troll? Where did you see that?

If no one has responded yet to your question, it's usually because no one
knows the answer. You haven't made clear if Entourage is crashing on _every
single complex HTML message_ or just certain ones. If it's every single one,
then the usual fix would be to remove those two preference files you
mentioned, and then _quit and relaunch Entourage_. Did you try relaunching?
If it's only certain messages, then the problem is generally within the
message you were sent. I'm not sure that anyone has any other suggestions.

network access turned off. Now it looks like it's all or nothing. The rest

That question is easier to answer. The control you have now in 2004 is
better than in X. The preference setting to Display Complex HTML in 2004 is
just the same as it was in X. You're right that the second pref to turn
interactive network access on or off, in Entourage X, is no longer in 2004.
In X that was a blanket pref which applied to all messages , or none. Now in
2004 network access is always OFF. You turn it on , _per message_, by
clicking the link "Download pictures", in each complex HTML message you
view."Download pictures" means exactly the same thing as "Network access",
except the option is now per message. You can also set a preference (in
Security prefs) to "Automatically download pictures from Address Book
contacts", which is the same as setting "Network access" ON for your
contacts. For now, turn that pref OFF (uncheck it) so that network access is
always OFF.

When you do that, do your crashes come before or after you click "Download
pictures" for a complex HTML message? If the crash comes before you click
that link, then it has nothing to do with network access since there isn't
any. Again, the only thing we know to suggest here is to remove those prefs
and relaunch. If the crash only comes after clicking Download Pictures, then
the link may be causing the crash.

Anyone.

I was confused. I had thought that "MVP's were employed by Microsoft and
paid to monitor this newsgroup. My bad. My comment was not directed at you
personally. I was just pointing out that I support the work of some of
the people who monitor this group (in other areas). Again - my bad.

On a side note - are we allowed to ask script questions in this forum?
Whoa! Who's accusing you of being a troll? Where did you see that?

Again, I was wrong. A response from paid employees was expected. Since I
didn't get one I was fishing for reasons. Given that monitors are volunteer
there should have been no expectation on my part for a response. My
apologies for the confusion.
If no one has responded yet to your question, it's usually because no one
knows the answer.

It turns out that my SP1 install was corrupt (I did it at the same time as
the Office 2004 install). When I ran the updater this AM it first installed
a smaller file called "Microsoft update 1.1.1"; then it installed the 23MB
SP1 again. Looks like the crashing is now fixed. (fingers crossed)

Thanks for the explanation. I thought there could be non-picture network
access I'm allowing with the new preference choices. Just being paranoid.

Thanks for your volunteer work on this newsgroup. I last visited my first
month or two with Office X 2 years ago. Now I'm on a little learning curve
with 2004 and appreciate this resource and all of the MVP's efforts to
support it.
