complex 'relay access denied error'..any helpers??

the message below is the message i receive from outlook express when i try
and send mail. i get a similar one from outlook itself.
i am running a machine with xp sp1 on it. the message is not being caused by
any of the obvious things ie the account is set up correctly, my isp does not
need server authentication, i don't think its norton anti-virus interfering
with things (i have played about wiht this), i do not have my firewall
activated on my wireless router for outgoing traffic and i have not yet got
sp2 so am assuming i have firewall issues on xp sp1. so..i am stumped.
the machine worked perfectly for about a week after initil purchse but not
just will not let me send email.
any assistance please because i need to know if i reinstall that its not
just going to keep happening..

You need to authenticate to your SMTP server (outbound mail) in your account
properties. Check with your ISP if you need help with the settings....

It could be that, the problem is as simple as the error indicates: mac.com
doesn't recognize any mailbox for "andybottomley" or that "andybottomley"
has his mail improperly relaying through another router.

Ah - I get confused with run-on sentences and no paragraph breaks!

It could be that, the problem is as simple as the error indicates:
mac.com doesn't recognize any mailbox for "andybottomley" or that
"andybottomley" has his mail improperly relaying through another
router.

Yes - I think you're right.

I have exactly the same problem. I read many suggestions and one of them is
"You need to authenticate to your SMTP server", but this did not work. I ask
my mail administrator and he said that i don't need to authenticate. He also
said that my mail program (outlook express) send to the server wrong command,
and this command is for example HELO=<mydomain> but it must be
HELO=<mydomain.com>. For some reason Outlook Express converts this command
and I am almost sure thet this is the problem but I don't know how to solve
it. Other solution is to install third party software and uninstall outlook
(Who needs more then one program doing same thing).

If someone can help, please help

thanks bloodsword. indeed it was not as simple as any of the fixes suggested
and something a little more deepseated.
through an exhaustive process of elimination i have found a way round this
but not a solution.
the prob appears to be related to the interoperability (or glitches therein)
of msft networking and outlook express and outlook itself.
i created a wireless network using msft networking and ensured that i
manually turned off all security features which might affect ability to send
mail, most notably the software firewall in the created network. however,
even with that turned off i was not able to send mail. the only solution has
been to completely remove msft wireless networking and revert back to a
straight internet connection via my wireless router.
this has completely resolved the issue. emails now back to normal.
man that was a pain! thanks to all those who took the time to try and assist
though.

Oops. You're in the wrong newsgroup. You want this one:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress

Outlook Express does nothing of the sort. If you're missing a fully
qualified domain name, it's because you've configured your computer to leave
it out. Look at your TCP/IP settings.

Other solution is to
install third party software and uninstall outlook (Who needs more
then one program doing same thing).

Outlook and Outlook Express aren't the same thing.
