Compound Document Properties read inconsistent with Word Statistics

Hi Gurus,

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 186898 at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q1
86/8/98.asp&NoWebContent=1 presented a way to retrieve
Word document properties.

I am interested in the "Word Count" property but found the
word count reported by the sample program was inconsistent
with the word count provided within Word (Tool > Word
Count). The two numbers are almost always different
unless I invoke "Tool > Word Count" within Word and then
save the document. Without doing this, the number
reported by the sample program will be far from correct.
An actual 2000 word document can be reported as 150.

Does any one out there know where the number is coming
from? Is there a way to retrieve the correct word count
without having the extra saving action? Please help!

Best,
Isaac

Hi Isaac,

I've never been a great fan of "Word count" discussions - the
concept has too little personal meaning for me... So I've
been hoping someone else would pick up on your question here,
or in the oleinterop group. Apparently not <sigh>

As I understand it, if Word would update Word count
constantly you wouldn't be able to get any work done. So it
only does so on opening the document (I think) and when you
expressly request the information.
