Compress 97 database using office 2000, do not want in 2000 forma.

Have a 97 access database that is running slow and I want to compress the
data. The problem is I am running office 2000 and I do not want to update
the database in the new format because it is updated nightly by other
software. This database is also linked to other databases. Is there a
way to compress this database without it updating it to office 2000 format?
