Compress a Graphic

Using Word 2002 SP3

When formatting a graphic, there is a button on the Picture tab called
'Compress'. It appears that if you downward resize a graphic or Crop a
graphic and then Compress it, the file size should be smaller.

I have tried this with both a regular photograph in JPG and a clipart, and I
do not get any reduction in file size. Can anyone explain why this does not
appear to work. It seems like the same feature as you find in PowerPoint
which does appear to work.

According to Word's Help, the Compress Picture feature will do the
following:

a. Reduce resolution (to 96 dots per inch (dpi) for Web and 200 dpi for
print), and unnecessary information is discarded.
b. Discard extra information. For example, when a picture has been
cropped or resized, the "hidden" parts of the picture are stored in the
file.
c. Compress the picture, if possible.

If the picture is already low-res and has been compressed, then no further
file size reduction is possible.
