compress images doesn't work?

Processor: Intel

On the Mac OS X version of PowerPoint 2008 there is an option to compress graphics files when saving the PowerPoint. However, even when the setting is at its lowest, the file size never decreases. Is this a "feature" that just doesn't work, or is there some trick I am missing?

Will the Mac version ever get the same features at the Windows version where images can be control-clicked to be individually compressed as needed?

I have applied both Office updates and am running 12.1.3.

There are a few reasons the file size might not change:

1) You've already saved the file with compression turned on, the images are
already compressed, so won't compress any more.

2) You've inserted images that are already compressed (ie JPG) and that are
smaller (in pixels) than PPT would compress them to. For example, if you
choose 200dpi compression and have a 400 pixel image that's 2" or more
across, there'd be no point in compressing it. It's already smaller than
the chosen target compression size.

We're volunteers here, not MS employees, though MS folks do sometimes read
and answer questions. I doubt any of them can comment on the features that
upcoming versions will or won't have, though, so we'll all have to wait 'n
see.

Steve,

Where can I choose '200dpi compression' I don't see where I can apply any change to an imported image.

Thanks

I don't have 2008 but ISTR others mentioning that you don't have this as a per-image option, only as a
save option for the entire presentation.

I've just read elsewhere that the image compression option does not apply
when saving the file in ppt or pptx format, only coming into play when you
choose to export the presentation as a series of image files.

In my opinion (as a conference technician and daily powerpoint user) the
lack of the windows versions "compress and remove cropped areas" option is a
serious omission from an otherwise great product.
