Compress performs an undo? (Word 2003 SP3)

I'm seeing some odd behaviour when trying to compress pictures in a
current document. This occurs when the picture has been pasted from
the clipboard, either as a bitmap or device independent bitmap.

I can crop the picture. Then when I perform Format Picture-->Compress,
select "Delete Cropped Areas of Picture", and click OK , the cropping
is undone. (Note: If I leave "Delete Cropped Areas of Picture"
unselected, the cropping is also undone),

Has anyone seen similar behaviour and know if this is a known issue?
