to where does the "new, compressed file" option send the compressed file? I
tried to do this, and then there is no file in the folder from which I
launched it? I wanted to simply add files that were in a folder to a
compressed file right there, like windows usually allows. Is this a problem
in Groove?

The file is written to a temporary location like

C:\Documents and Settings\Mark Smith\Local
Settings\Temp\GrvTemp2d8mw2845pcexvuqxsdi1\D

Not useful.

so then how does one use the right click on file, send to, compressed folder
option?

You don't.

If you want to create a compressed file in Groove, you will need to copy
your files out of the files tool into a temp folder, compress them and then
add the compressed file back into Groove.

Groove compresses files stored in a files tool anyhow, I think, so saving a
new compressed file and then deleting the originals won't save you much.

so what is the purpose of having the functionality that I listed IN GROOVE?
Not quite clear here.

correct
they are just picking up the standard windows UI and should have blanked
option this out or implemented it the standard way - ie exported files but to
a zipped folder directly rather than a 2 stage process.
