Computer Freezes when Send/Receive

Can anyone tell me why my winXP sp2 3ghz 2gb ram computer freezes every time
Outlook XP Send/Receives mail?

CPU utilization is at 3% to 20%, and ram usage is at 500mb. So there are
plenty of resources available.

The same problem persists when NIS 2006 is disabled.
