computer hangs when completing mail merge

I just installed Window XP Professional and Office 2003. Now the computer
hangs when I try to complete a mail merge with data from an Access database
or if I try checking and reporting errors. I have a gigabit of RAM and the
task manager window shows "not responding" and a CPU Usage of 100%
