computer hangs when starting Word

Dear office experts,

A friend of mine has installed Microsoft office 2000. All software
components like excel works fine. But Word has problems. At first it starts
in a safe modus which was unfamilair for me. Then I thought perhaps it would
be a solution to reïnstall word. But when reïnstalling it results in with a
new problem that word hangs the PC at the splashscreen that is when it
starts up and shows the startup logo etc. I've tried to reïnstalling whole
office but it also results in a halt during starting up word. Excel and the
others works but except for word. I've tried all the reïnstalling options.
like first removing and then removing the directory from the program files.
and I tried the re-install option in the install from office.

Then I've tried to start word with the /a parameter. start -> run ->
winword.exe /a
with that parameter Word starts corect. I've read that renaming the
normal.dot should solve the problem. I haven't tried yet. but I cannot
understand why this should work because when you remove office and removing
the directory from the program files should remain in a clean office install
according to me and thus should the normal.dot file a clean one installed
from the cd.

how is this? and are there any other methods to get word ready again.
