Our end users have created a Power Point presentation with 70 slides that is
taking up at times 98% of their CPU usage and 325 MB of their RAM. Such
system resource utilitzation is causing them performance issues. Many of the
70 slides have data imported from Excel. The computer is a Dell Latitude D600
Pentium M 1.4, 512 MB Ram.
We also run into complaints from the same group that their Excel files and
Access Databases run slow. These Excel files use pivot tables connecting to
various other Excel files over our LAN. The Access databases have in some
cases approached and exceeded the 2 GB mark.
Our end users believe the systems are good enough for their needs, so we've
ordered an Inspiron XPS and a Precision M70. We still get comlaints that
PowerPoint/Excel run sluggish even with these two other systems.
While we can keep throwing newer and more powerful laptops at the problem
(as we have for the last year) we will eventually reach a ceiling. Our IT
department is split on whether is its a design issue with the Excel/Power
Point/Access files or a hardware issue that requires the faster
Inspiron/Precision laptops.
