Computer Response Very Lethargic / Sluggish

I

Computer Facts:

MS Windows ME
1 Ghz Pentinum
60G Hard Drive (<10% usage)

Symptom:

Takes a very long time to boot up (~2 minutes). After
bootup, it takes literally minutes to start a program
(Word for example) and interact with the OS. Here are
the error messages that occur:

Pgmonitr has caused an error
in PGSDIK.DLL
Pgmonitr will now close

Unhandled Exception c0000005
at Address 1000i6b8

Norton Anti Virus would not Load.

Are there any virus identification steps we can take?
Any viruses to check for?

Thanks!
Bob

Try Symantec.com and run an on-line virus scan.
Then try a spyware scan (Adaware or Spybot).
If those fail to find anything try re-posting the relevant Windows Me news
group.

You should dump Windows ME. It's very unstable. All technicians I've spoken with said the same thing. I had ME and it crashed. And you shouldn't try to load something else on top. Wipe your system clean and start over. If you keep ME, please make sure you back up your data constantly. Fortunately, I had.
