Configure Outlook attachment icon to display in email header

A

Adrastos

When attaching a file to an email in Outlook 2003, the attached file icon
usually displays in the body of the email where I last left my cursor.

But occasionally I get the attachment to display in the header of my email,
below the Subject line in a line labeled Attachments. I'm not sure why
Outlook suddenly organizes the attachment icons this way, but it sometimes
does.

How do I configure Outlook so that my attached file icons always display in
the header? Thanks in advance!

Hi Adrastos,

Thanks for posting here. GREAT INFO, Sue.

I agree with Sue that it is the feature of ¡°Rich Text¡± formatting that to
have attachments embedded in the mail body. If you compose a mail message
in ¡°Rich Text¡± format, you may see attachments embedded in the message
body. And if the new mail is in ¡°Plain Text¡± or ¡°HTML¡± format, you
could not see attachment embedded in mail body but appeared under the email
subject line.

So if you would like to embed attachment within mail, you can set mail in
¡°Rich Text¡± format; if you would like the attachment in Attach field, you
can set the mail in ¡°Plain text¡± or ¡°HTML¡± format.

Hope this helps. If there is anything unclear, feel free to let me know.
Thanks!

Lee Li

Hi Lee

On my Outlook 2003 I am able to insert file on attachments field only when I
use plain text format. If I use HTML I get an icon with a question mark in
the body of the mail!

To insert a file my user does like this:
- open a received email with attachment
- click COPY on the attachment
- then close the message, reply YES to keep the copy into the clipboard
- Open a new message then click PASTE

Do you have an idea?
Thank a lot
Jean-Claude

Hi Jean-Claude,

Thanks for posting here.

Personally, I don't think it is a good idea to paste the attachment to
another new mail after closing the original mail containing this
attachment. There are some known issues for doing so due to not sufficient
information available on the clipboard to retain attachment. In my own
Outlook 2003, I cannot see anything when I paste the attachment after
closing original mail. More info here:

Multiple attachments do not paste as expected in a new e-mail message in
Outlook 2002
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;840392

Note the article also applies to Outlook 2003.

I suggest using one of the following methods to work around this problem:

- Save the attachments to your hard disk, and then attach them to the
e-mail message. To attach an attachment to an e-mail message, follow these
steps:

1. Click in the body of the e-mail message.
2. On the File menu, click Insert.
3. Click the file that you want to attach, and then click Insert.

- Keep the original e-mail message that you copied the attachments from
open when you paste the attachments in the new e-mail message.
