Configuring SMTP Mail Server in MS Project 2003.

P

Peri

Dear All,

Can anyone help me out in configuring SMTP mail server in MS Project 2003.

I have already tried the following, but I am not able to receive any mails
from MS Project.

1. Login to MS Project Web Access using Administrator
2. Clicked on Admin
3. Clicked on Customize Project Web Access
4. Clicked on Nofifications and Reminders on the left panel
5. I have set th SMTP Mail Server with port number(25)/From Address/Company
E-Mail Address/Default e-mail message

After configuring this I tried sending notifications, but the emails are not
reaching the concerned person.

I have installed MS Project in Windows 20003 server which is a domain
controller. I also tried giving the option for user authentication as
"Project server authentication only"

Can any one help me out on this?

Thanks and Regards,

Peri

Hi Peri,

A couple of questions

1. What mail server are you using?
2. Are you hosting your mail server or is it being hosted by an ISP?
3. Does your mail server require SMTP Authentication prior to sending?
4. Can I safely assume that _all_ Project Server user accounts have the
email address configured for each user? (BTW, the type authentication
has no bearing on your particular problem)

Let us know when you have a chance

Thanks for your response.I have answered your question.

1. What mail server are you using? -> I have tried my external mail server
hosted by our ISP (SMTP Mail server: mail.chellasoft.com) and our internal
mail server (there is a software called FTGate - SMTP Mail Server:
192.168.0.2)

2. Are you hosting your mail server or is it being hosted by an ISP? - I
have answered your question in point 1.

3. Does your mail server require SMTP Authentication prior to sending - No
(If yes, please let me know what should i do?)

4. Can I safely assume that _all_ Project Server user accounts have the
email address configured for each user? (BTW, the type authentication has
no bearing on your particular problem) -> Yes, all project users have a
valid user account, email address(Both internal (FTGate) and external (ISP)

Thanks and Regards,

Peri

What is the fully qualified domain name of the internal mail server?
For example, mail.domain.com

Add this name to the "SMTP mail server" box on the Notifications and
reminders page for PWA.

The "From address" and "Company e-mail address" need to be legitimate
email addresses that have mailboxes on the internal mail server.

2. Are you hosting your mail server or is it being hosted by an ISP? - I

3. Does your mail server require SMTP Authentication prior to sending - No
(If yes, please let me know what should i do?)

No changes necessary

The email address I was referring to was for the Project Server user
account. You cannot have 2 email addresses for each Project Server user
account. It just doesn't work. Add _only_ the internal email address for
the Project Server users.

Let us know what happens...

The fully qualified name of the internal mail server is
mail.chellasoft.com

I have added this name to the SMTP Mail Server box in the Notification and
Reminder Page of PWA.
The From address and the Company mali address is the same
([email protected])
This account has a mailbox in the internal mail server

For both internal and External Mail we use only the same mail id. (eg)
(e-mail address removed)
This Id has been included in all Resource Pool, Enterprise Resource Pool and
the Project Server User account.

Hi Peri,

More questions...

1. Has anyone successfully sent or received email from
(e-mail address removed)?

2. Where is the Project Server in network relation to the Mail Server?
Is it in the same subnet? Can anyone in the same subnet as Project
Server send/receive email?
NOTE:Do not test with the Web Mail function.

3. Are you absolutely sure that SMTP Authentication is not enable on the
FTGate - SMTP Mail Server?

Try the following from the Project Server as Administrator.

a. Click Start --> Run, type CMD and click OK
b. From the Command Line window, type the following:
telnet mail.chellasoft.com 25
c. You should see the version number of the FTGate Mail Server
d. Type the following command:
EHLO mail.chellasoft.com
e. Cut and paste the reply and post the reply back to this thread.

Look forward to reading your findings

Good Luck

Here are the replies for your questions.
(1) Yes. Mails have been successfully sent and received from
(e-mail address removed)
(2) Project Server and Mail Server are in the same subnet. Anyone in the
same subnet can send and receive email.
(3) In FTGate properties, under the tab SMTP Server, the option "Enable SMTP
Server for incoming connection on" is checked
Under the same tab, the option "Validate incoming servers with the MAPS
RBL List" is unchecked.
(4) For the fourth question, I received a message,
"Connecting to mail.chellasoft.com.......Could not open connection to the
host on port 25, connection failed"

Regards
Peri
