Something is causing the "Confirm Open After Download" box in the advanced
area of the Folder Options - Files Types tab to be cleared without my
knowledge or permission. This is happening for all Micrsoft Office files
types.
Several weeks ago my system quit offering me the option to Open, Save, or
Cancel downloaded .csv files when I was on the internet and immediately
opened the file in Excel. When I went to My Computer - Folder Options - File
Types and chose any of the Microsoft office file types I discovered that the
when I clicked on the Advanced button the "Confirm Open After Download" box
had been unchecked. Once I rechecked it for XLS, DOC and PPT files the
option to Open, Save, or Cancel came back. The problem is I have no idea how
this happened because I certainly didn't do it.
More alarmingly, I just had to use the Excel "Detect & Repair" function
because comments in various cells quit displaying when I moved the cursor
over them even though the "Comment indicator only" button was selected in the
Tools - Options box. After running this repair from the original product
Office 2000 CD I lost the option to Open, Save, or Cancel files from the
internet again and had to recheck the "Confirm Open After Download" box once
more. Since automatically opening a file is dangerous it doesn't seem
reasonable that MS would unckeck the "Confirm Open After Download" box as the
default. Assuming that's true, is there some kind of malicious code coming
over the net that is capable of doing this? BTW I have Windows XP Home Ed
with all updates current and I'm behind a router.
