Conflict in Renaming Procedures

We are running Server 2003. When researching project renaming on this
board, I find conflicting recommendations. What is the best way to do
this?

1. Use Microsoft renaming tool?

2. Save off project as .mpp, delete old from Server through PWA (?),
upload saved-off project with new name, then republish by overwriting
actual work (how will it know what actual work to overwrite since it's
a new named project).

Could someone please help me understand the correct way? MANY THANKS!

There are two correct ways to do it. #2 was the only way to do this in
Project Server 2002, and remained the only way to do it in Project Server
2003 until Microsoft released the Project Renamer tool. Of the two choices,
obviously #1 is the simplest and easiest.

Regarding your question about procedure #2, the software knows what is
actual work because that is the historical data recorded in the Actual Work
field in the project. Hope this helps.

I think I confused myself. If I use option #2, when the project is
deleted thru PWA, all user tasks are deleted from timesheets and cube,
right? Then when the new-named plan is uploaded (it will still have
users and their Work that was/wasn't performed --same as the old
plan). What happens to tasks when the new-named plan is republished?
Will it just push out tasks as they currently stand in the new-named
plan and appear as new tasks (can't overwrite because it's a new
plan)? Will those who have completed tasks (in old plan), receive
these republished tasks? Would the best way to publish be Collaborate-
Publish-All Information? Sorry all the questions, but thanks so much.

When you save a project as an MPP file using option #2, the project file
contains all historical Actual Work data, and all future planned Work. You
lose nothing saving it as an MPP file. When the Project Server
administrator deletes the enterprise project, then yes, the system will
remove all of the project data from the system, including tasks on team
members' View My Tasks page. After importing the project back into the
Project Server system, I recommend you do the following:

1. Collaborate - Publish - All Information.
2. Collaborate - Publish - Republish Assignments with the "Overwrite actual
work..." option selected in the dialog.

The first option pushes all of your project data to every area of PWA, but
the system will not show completed tasks on each team member's View My Tasks
page. The second option is what pushes completed task information onto each
team member's View My Tasks page. This will show up as completed tasks. If
you only want your team members to see current and future tasks, you can
eliminate step #2 above. See how complicated this solution is?

Wouldn't it be easier to use the Project Renamer tool instead? The only
warning I have about the tool is to make sure that none of your PM's have
unnapproved task updates waiting on their Task Updates page in PWA. If they
do, ask them to approve all updates before you use the tool. Hope this
helps.
