Confused about macros

I recently got a new computer with Word 2002. I've opened many of my old docs
created in Word 97 with no problem. Now suddenly I got a warning, even opening
Word, that I have "macros" and I don't know what to do.
I set the macro security level to "High."
I think on Word 97 I had it set not to open any documents containing macros
without warning me. I assumed I was protected against trouble from documents
that people might send my through the Internet. And I never had any problems
with Word 97.
The document which caused all of this is an old one that I created and have
edited almost daily since the first of the year.
I even got a Microsoft "crash report" which I was instructed to send to
Microsoft. This is totally mysterious to me.
It said in the warning message that "It is always safe to disable macros, but
you might lose some functionality." It also said the macro was from a "trusted
source" (Microsoft), so I checked "accept" and was able to use Word again.
I looked under Tools | Macros and found that one macro was there and it said
that I had created it--on this date! I have no idea what this means. How could
I have created a macro without even knowing it? That box was always empty in
Word 97.
I just want to open Word and do my work without any more problems.
Should I remove the macro that I (unknowingly) "created" today?
Should I "disable" all macros, and will that guarantee that I have no more
problems?
Thanks

The most likely answer is that you have an add-in in Word's Startup
directory that is putting a macro in Normal.dot at startup. This is a dumb
thing to do and suggests that the add-in is poorly written and probably
doesn't work right in Word 2002 or add much utility. Check Tools | Templates
and Add-ins to see what's there. Unless the add-in is vital, you'll probably
want to move it out of Word's Startup folder.

Alternatively, you can set the macro security to Medium, and then you'll get
a message allowing you to enable macros if you wish. On the Trusted Sources
tab of Tools | Macro | Security, check the box for "Trust all installed
templates and add-ins," and you won't get a message from any templates in
your user templates folder or any add-ins in Word's Startup folder.
Unfortunately, this "trust" doesn't cover the Office Startup folder, where
some add-ins are installed.

Thanks. I will check these things out. I've used Word for ten years and never
had anything like this happen before. It's a bit unnerving. I wonder if I
should run the "Repair Word" function that I see offered.

It happened again, and this time I noted that it said Microsoft WORKS contains
macros. Word is part of the Works Suite, so I suppose that's the source of the
confusion.
I checked Tools | Templates and Add-ins as you suggested and there are none
there. Also, there are no macros (or viruses) in any of my Word docs or
templates.
I have reset the security level to medium and hope I'll have no more trouble.
Thanks for your help.

As Graham advised you in another NG, the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for
Word (WKWDADDN.DLL) is nothing but a nuisance and is best uninstalled
immediately.
