confused in Users and resources

There are two objects in Project 2002 (using server and
professional), one is "user" and the other is "resource".

If, for example, our staffs are all project resources,
they are duplicated in "resource list" when using Project
Web Access to assign resources to a task.

To make my question clear, say, there are 3 staffs their
project account are: USER1, USER2 and USER3, and because
they are also resources, so I create three resources R1
(as USER1), R2 (as USER2) and R3 (as USER3).

In the dropdown list of "Enterprise Resources",
USER1,User2,User3,R1,R2,R3 are all listed. But in
the "Enterprise Resource view" (where we can manage
resources), there are no USER1, USER2 and USER3.

My questions are:

1. If USER1, USER2 and USER3 are resources (can be
selected in resource list), why they can not be managed in
Enterprise Resource view?

2. Is there any way to filter-out "USERs" from
the "Resource list", so they can not be selected?

one additional question is: how to assign a project
manager to a specific project? (because one staff might be
a project manager in one project, and be a normal member
in another project, how to assign role to him/her?)

Thanka in advance

Hi Bill

Thanks really much for your reply. Now I understand how to
define users and resources.

Please help me a little more: how could I assign a user to
a project manager?

You know, in a company one staff might take different
roles in different projects. One may work as a project
manager in one project and work as a normal member in
another project. Because he is a PM, he must be in the PM
group. Does this mean he could act as a PM in every
project ?

Is there any way to assign a user to a PM in a paticular
project?

Thanks again

Hi Huang,

Lets step back a minute and look at this problem in a different way. There
should be no reason to have to duplicate users that are also resources.
Instead of creating "USER1" and "R1", just create "R1" and assign that
person to the appropriate groups.

Personally, I like to add all users/resources to the Resource Pool, then
assign them their individual security rights in PWA. This way there is
always a one-to-one match and there aren't any 'special' processes for
adding resources.

To answer your question though, the reason for why you do not see R1, R2, R3
is probably because they probably are not actually in the pool. Login as
the administrator and see if you can see those resources. If you can, then
you will need to adjust the Category settings in PWA so PM's can see them
(Admin->Manage Security->Categories).

Hi Huang,

Actually, you are asking a lot of questions that can be fairly complex in
setting up. I would recommend that you consider reading the Microsoft EIF
(Enterprise Implementation Framework):

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...project/project2002/reskit/toolbox/tbdply.asp

I would also recommend you buy the book Implementing Enterprise Portfolio
Management with Microsoft Project Server 2002:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...102-8347594-0608923?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

That being said, I can answer some of your questions at a higher level. As
you get into it, I would suggest you start asking some new questions here on
the newsgroups so we can help step you thru things.

Any user of the system can be added to multiple groups. So a Team Member
can also be a Project Manager can also be an EPMS Administrator. You do
this by adding the same user to multiple groups.

It is true that a Project Manager/Team Member will be able to manage any
project they open (whether it is owned by them or not). You can limit the
chances of accidental overwriting of other schedules by using the RBS
(Resource Breakdown Structure) and modifying the Cateogories these users
belong to. For example:

On: Allow users in this category to view all projects they manage
Off: Allow users in this category to view all projects to which they are
assigned
Off: Allow users in this category to view all projects managed by resources
that they manage
Off: Allow users in this category to view all projects assigned to
resources that they manage

This would allow, say, a Project Manager to only be able to access their own
projects.

Now, to let MSP know that the Project Manager owns this project, you need to
use Project Web Access, go to the "Projects" tab, select the row for the
project you want to update (be careful not to click on the project name
itself because that is a link). Finally, click the "Edit Project Details"
button and change the owner.
