Confusion over setting max weekly hours per resource

Hi all,

I'm quite new to Project and have searched long to find a solution for
my seemingly simple dilemma, but I can't seem to find any that apply.

Say, for instance, that I have a project which calls for three
employees to work on six tasks, but each worker shouldn't exceed about
10 hours a week.

I am trying to determine how to configure Project so that each employee
does not work over 10 hours a week; if a task has a duration of 1 week
and I assign a resource then their total work should indicate 10 hours.
If a task says 12 hours, it should take the resource more than a week to
complete it.

If I change the Calendar tab of the Options window so that no employee
can work more than 2 hours a day or 10 hours a week, all of the entered
durations drastically increase as a result. Again, and it is kind of
hard to explain, but I am trying to figure out the best way to restrict
a worker from exceeding 10 hours per week. If I decrease their Max
Units down to 25% and assign them to a 1 wk task, they still register as
having to work 40 hours. Many thanks in advance.

Hi RiiDii,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You need to absorb the fact that Project uses the formula Duration = Work X
Units of Resource. Try Window/Split. Enter the Resource in the lower
screen and Duration and Work and see what Project does. You need to get the
combination right. I would set the Max Units at 25%. You might like to have

Thanks for the help guys! I did also read one of the recommende
tutorials from Mike and will be revisiting it and the others during thi
coming week. Very informative

One final question, wonder if the hourly restriction isn't an eve
number? If a resource can work 10 hours a week then their max units ca
be set to 25%, but wonder if they can only work 5 hours a week?
notice MS Project doesn't allow decimal points in the percentages, so i
I wanted to precisely limit a worker to 5 strict hours a week, woul
there be any simple way to do this? 5/40 = 12.5% Thank you once again

You can enter 12.5% and Proect will respect it and use 1/8 in its
calculations, though it rounds to 13% for display purposes.
