Connecting to Exchange Server Problems

E

Evan

I have an Exchange Server mailbox at work that I connect to with Outlook 07.
I use Outlook 03 at home to download Hotmail messages with the Live Connector.
I can reach the Exchange server on the web.
When I try to set up an account through the Control Panel with my Outlook 03
and the Exchange server at work, I get a message that Outlook is not
connected to the network. I am following the directions on doing this from my
workplace but I still get the same error message.
I tried deleting the Hotmail account but still no luck in setting up the
Exchange account.
Any suggestions?

Sorry, not sure what that means.

I don't think it’s the live account causing problems. Are you using RPC over
HTTP?

How did the company tell you to set up outlook?

Ok. #10 shows it’s an RPC/HTTP account. The problem is that you are trying
to set it up outside the network - which is often problematic and
occasionally very slow.

If the server name (sdc-mbx-01.exchange.washington.edu) is not exposed in
public DNS, you need to create a hosts entry with the public IP address so
outlook knows where to look for it. When I ping the url in proxy settings
(exchange.washington.edu) I get 140.142.17.16 as the IP - so add that IP to
the hosts. To do this, paste
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
in the address bar in windows explorer or start search field in Vista. Open
the Hosts file with notepad. Enter (or paste)
140.142.17.16 sdc-mbx-01.exchange.washington.edu
into it, under the last entry.

Once the account is working it should work without the hosts, but for some
reason outlook doesn't always find the server the first time.

Didn't work; received same message. I'm thinking I should call Comcast and
see if they have any ideas. The IT people at work haven't figured it out
either.

Comcast will tell you outlook won't work with their services. :)

What firewall do you use? RPC over HTTPS uses normal ports that should be
open so it should be a firewall problem or even anything comcast would
block. It should like like normal web browsing traffic.
