Our company is implementing the EPM .We have configured the Project server
with SQL server 2005 and is working well on LAN. We want to connect our
remote sites now .We have a fire wall on the server side. What is the best
way to connect a remote client computer over the internet? I am not a soft
ware expert but a Project manageemnt professional. Cany any one help me?.We
are having problems with VPN.

This has been discussed in past threads (search: "VPN", "remote
connect".), but here is a summary:

1. Project Professional connects directly to the server database via ODBC
over port 1433. This port must be open unrestricted on the SQL server for
Professional to connect over a WAN, and I assume you mean "internet"
connection. A security nightmare waiting to happen!

2. VPN is your best choice for security, but due to the sometimes immense
volume of data transfer on Professional start-up and periodic saves,
performance can suffer. Using VPN to load the project and THEN go "off-line"
to do the real work is a an option.

3. Using remote desktop directly to a server is the best performance answer,
but you lose the ability to go "off-line" since Professional is running on
the server, not the remote PC. There are probably Terminal Server and
Professional license issues that could make this expensive to set up and
maintain. Citrix is an option I've seen mentioned here, but I have never (to
my knowledge) used Citrix in an application environment. It is a mystery to
me ...! :>)

Hope this helps!

JC,
Thanks a million for taking your valuable time off for eduacating me .Today
I could establish a connection to project server using Professional
through VPN. However it disconnects after about a minute.I think the dial up
connection is not stable.
Thanks once again

Dial-up, ouch!!! You definitely need rock-solid network conections using
Professional in EPM! PWA can get away with less, not Professional.

Good Luck!
