"Connection failed" SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 1396

Using MS Explorer and from a PC client, I can no longer access my first MS
Project file uploaded to MS Project Server 2003 since installation (first
install).

When I double click to open the project file from Explorer, the following
occurs:

1. The "Project Server Security Logon" menu appears.
2. I enter my password.
3. A message menu pops up with,
"Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 1396
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Named Pipes]ConnectionOpen
(CreateFile().
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 1396
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] Client Unable to establish
connection
4. Click Ok
5. SQL Server Login menu appears
6. Click Ok
7. Same message appears as in #3.

On other PC clients as well, any project files that begin with this filename
have same problem.

Thanks,
-Jeff

Could you clarify your statement "On other PC clients as well, any project
files that begin with this filename
have same problem?" What file name are you referring to?

Ostensibly the error indicates that you're using named pipes to connect to
SQL. Project Server requires TCPIP. This may be a false error. Please
clarify above.

Gary,

Thanks for your help. It turns out I needed to update/match the MDAC version
on laptop with my server.

Your question prompted me to understand how or why I could not open any
files from my local drive or mapped drive in the pattern of
master_proj_v*.mpp from my laptop. I had mapped another drive to a second
PC/Server and could not access these files either using MS Project from my
Laptop either. I figured there was some sort of access or security issue with
my PC client.

I searched www.microsoft.com again for the error previously described, I
somehow missed a bulletin with this exact message earlier. I used the
component checker cc.exe and the MDAC_TYP.exe utilities to update my laptop
MDAC to v2.8 SP1. I am now able to open my project files after entering my
password through Explorer. Below is a link to the bulletin for anyone else in
need. I am sure there are more issues to tackle. Thanks again. -JR
