Hi Bob,
You can use Insert=>Picture=>New drawing to get a drawing canvas even if the default setting to automatically create one is turned
off in Tools=>Options=>General.
If you use Powerpoint to create the same flowchart the connectors do work. A powerpoint slide is effectively a single drawing
canvas object and some folks prefer to work in Powerpoint and either paste or insert a PPT object into Word.

well);
If Tools>Options>General has the checkbox cleared for 'Automatically create
Drawing Canvas ...' when you create the AutoShapes (Flowchart Symbols) you
can still select the Connector tools and use them to draw connectors from
one shape to another. Those lines will still behave as they should in terms
of curvature, direction, etc., but they *do not* actually connect the
shapes - they simply act as lines drawn from one shape to another You can
Group the shapes & connecting lines, but that isn't taking advantage of how
the feature is intended to work..
However, if you create the shapes (without using the Drawing Canvas), go
back into Options & restore the check mentioned above, it effectively kills
the Connector tools. Remove the check & you can use the Connectors as
described in the previous paragraph.
If you have a check in the box, when you create the shapes in the Canvas you
can then use the Connectors to actually *connect* the shapes rather than
just draw connecting lines.
