Consecutive record fields in a report

Can someone tell me how I can define 2 variables to consecutive records
(variables equal to one of the fields in the 2 records) in a ACCESS report? I
would like to compare the 2 variables to determine if they are equal and make
a groupfooter in a report visible if they are not. The fields could be text
or single numbers.
