Consecutive section numbering

T

Terri

I have a document with 10 total pages and 3 sections.
The first two pages comprise section one which I is not
numbered. Starting with section 2 I want to start the
numbering to read Page 1 of 8, excluding pages 1&2 from
the overall page count. I have tried putting in the
following fields in the footer {Page} of {SectionPages}.
This only counts the number of pages in the section. I
want to have it span the next section(s). I have tried
Continue from previous section with no luck. I have tried
a bookmark at the end of the last section and used the
following field: {PageRef "bookmark"}, but if I add pages
or sections, it does not update, unless I delete it and
insert it again at the end of the document.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks.

If you have the option activated in Tools/Options/Print, this
will update when you print. Probably also if you switch into
another view, then back into Print Layout.

I think what Terri is saying is that the bookmark she put at the end of the
document is not moving, so text appended to the end follows the bookmark,
which is no longer on the last page. The only solution I can think of for
this is either to move the bookmark manually or to add an empty paragraph in
which the bookmark sits, and add new text before that final paragraph.

Ah. In that case, I'd suggest something along these lines:

1. If the number of pages in that first section is known (2, for instance),
and won't change:

{ = { NumPages } - 2 }

2. If the number of pages can vary, then put a SectionPages field at the top
of the firat page in that section, bookmark it (Sec1Pages), then:

{ = { NumPages } - { Ref Sec1Pages } }

Thanks for trying to help.
I tried it, but didn't seem to update the field.
Thanks anyway!

Hi Suzanne,

I did exactly what you suggested, put the bookmark on an
empty paragraph mark at the end and made sure all text was
added above the book mark. Didn 't work.
I will try the other suggestion noted in a reply.
Thanks for responding; however!

The REF field may not update automatically but should update when you print
or Print Preview.
