Consequence of moving folder

This is really a Windows question, but in my case it applies mostly to Office
Apps, especially Excel.

I'm considering a major reorganization of file and folder locations on a
file server and am concerned that moving files into different folders may
break links in other documents or spreadsheets.

I have several spreadsheets that link to other spreadsheets both in the same
folder and in other locations.

Likewise I have several Word docs with hyperlinks to other Word docs in
various locations on the server.

Will moving these files break the links, or is Windows smart enought to save
a pointer to the new location? The server is running Server 2003 R2, and all
clients are on XP (some Home Edition, but most Pro).

Are there any other consequences I should be aware of?

Hi Marcotte,

With Excel, provided the relative path between the files remain the same, the links should be OK.

With Word, provided the absolute path to the source files remain the same, the links should be OK.

Otherwise, you'll need to repair the links.
