Considering a binary group for screenshot posts

I think the MS server ops should consider adding a binary group to these
help forums so that a poster can upload a screenshot of what they are
referring to for certain situations.

This would allow me, for example, to upload a screen shot of my
relationships panel, and would show all of my related tables to assist a
person in helping me with a question or problem.

It would seem much easier than mapping out such a relationships set-up
in text form. It could have like two or three day retention, so it would
not gum up your forums' servers.

Thank you, MS for any considerations in this realm.

No. He is NOT welcome to attach a screenprint with his post. While
Microsoft's abyssmal web interface might allow it, these are NNTP
newsgroups, and binary postings are not welcome in NNTP newsgroups unless
the word binary appears in their name.

Remember that not everyone has high speed access to the internet. In some
countries, people pay by the minute for their internet connection, so
downloading a large posting can cost money.

There are many free websites out there. Post the picture there, and put a
link to it in the newsgroup.

Um, not in a newsgroup that does not have "binary" in the name. Many would slam
you big time for doing so and many servers (like mine) would simply toss the
attachment anyway.

The usual recommendation is to post the picture on a web site and then post a
link to it in these groups.

WOW! I did not realize that. I see it from time to time and have never
seen anyone complain.

Good to know.

Yes, in the ALT hierarchy. Since this is NOT the alt hierarchy, it
would seem that YOUR rules MAY not apply.

Yeah. That's why you DL HEADERS ONLY, then DL ONLY those messages you
WISH to actually READ.

Sounds like a lot of work. Maybe dial ups should try grabbing ONLY
HEADERS, and then NOT getting any which contain screenshots.

Jeez... cry about it already!

Did anyone ever come up with the RIGHT answer on this?

The right answer is no binary posts, except in newsgroups that have the word
"binary" in their title.

It has nothing to do with what Microsoft may or may not allow through their
web interface: it's standard rules for NNTP (which is what these newsgroups
actually use)

However, the "binary" titled newsgroups you refer to are ALL in the
"alt" hierarchy.

Microsoft and their servers are not in the alt hierarchy, and regardless
of whether the medium is Usenet and NNTP, the naming of groups has
nothing to do with the content EXCEPT in the ALT hierarchy.

Most folks that operate servers snip "binary" posts that are NOT in said
hierarchy, so it doesn't matter anyway. I DOES, however, likely mean
that the MICROSOFT servers *would* get it, and therefore answer the
question related to it.

Any dope that uses such a poor news client that he or she cannot DL
headers only, and see what the line count is so that such a post can be
bypassed should not be on Usenet, much less with a dial up, or pay by the
data fed rate or time rate connection. If one hinders one's life to that
extent, then that person should be smart enough to deal with the
consequences of opting for a poorly chosen connection to the outside
world.

In other words, learn how to read the headers in a group BEFORE you DL
a post, instead of blindly DLing every post in a group when you get
online.

Don't blame you poor choices on others that enjoy the hot connections
we have, and don't blame the world full of hot connections for your lack
thereof.

If you want to play, you got to pay. If you don't pay, suffer the
consequences of the rights and freedoms exercised and enjoyed by those
that did pay so they could play.

In other words... I don't think it's your call. It certainly isn't the
NNTP world's call. They have nothing against it. The rules you iterate
are for the alt hierarchy ONLY.

I think it is Microsoft's call as to whether they want such activity..
