Consistent formatting of figures

I'm trying to edit a figure (scatter plot) that has some text boxes overlayed on top (containing the regression line for the plotted points) and any attempt to edit the text boxes results in:
1. Reformatting of the X and Y axis bars along with most of the fonts to be darker/bolded.
2. Smooth line indicating the regression line becomes very jagged and thicker (looks like line smoothing got turned off for some reason).
3. Boarder on my points becomes much thicker and darker.

None of these items that change were actually edited by me. Word decided that the previous edits I'd made regarding formatting were wrong (a persistent problem with just about any deviation from default formatting). Is there a way to edit the text box without word undoing an hours worth of custom formatting, and without reducing the smoothing of the regression line?

I am wondering if you have some of the more toxic options switched on in one
or more of your styles.

Word should leave your formatting alone, but there are a few things you
might want to turn off to make sure it does:

First go to Word>Preferences>Autocorrect>Autoformat as you type and turn off
everything in the top and bottom sections of that dialog.

Now use Format>Style and choose "Modify" on the style in use. Ensure that
"Automatically update" is NOT enabled. (The option does not show for Normal
style in Word 2008).

See if that makes it any better.

All text in text boxes and the like is, by default, in Normal style. It's
good practice to use styles OTHER than Normal Style wherever possible, for
just this reason. A change to a style affects every piece of text in the
document that has that style applied.

So I recommend using a different style for each "kind" of paragraph in a
document, to keep their formatting separate.

Hope this helps

I understand where John's coming from here, but that wouldn't account for
the changes to the graphic elements of the chart... What file format are you
saving the file as? If you've used any of the "fancies" of SmartArt
formatting then saved as .doc the chart is being converted to a picture. Is
the chart, itself, still editable?
