constant hard drive activity started by Excel X

W

William Duckworth

I'm running MacOSX 10.3.2 and Excel X (latest update).

When I launch Excel, a periodic (about every 1-2 seconds) hard drive
sound starts, like an error message being written to a log over and
over.

Quitting Excel doesn't make the problem go away, but a restart does
(until I launch Excel again).

My system.log and console.log files both show:

/Applications/Microsoft Office X/Microsoft Excel: *** Warning:
ATSUMeasureText has been deprecated. Use ATSUGetUnjustifiedBounds
instead. ***

But not repeatedly, only once per Excel launch. I can't find the log
being constantly written to (if my guess is correct anyway).

One further wrinkle, I also use Konfabulator and CodeTek Virtual
Desktop Pro. Both launch at startup and do not cause the repeated hard
drive access. After I launch Excel and the noise starts, if I
quit-and-relaunch either Konfabulator or CodeTek Virtual Desktop Pro
or both, the hard drive "ticking" stops (until the next time I launch
Excel).

Completely odd.

If you have any troubleshooting tips or hints, please let me know.

Does Microsoft Mac BU read this group?

What happens when you launch XL without Konfabulator or VDP running? How
about when you turn off widgets.

Any change if you turn off VDP's focus-follows-mouse feature?

Do you have the Office Notifications daemon active?

Does Microsoft Mac BU read this group?

yes, sometimes, but you might never know. To be sure that MacBU gets
your feedback, choose Give Feedback on Excel from the Help menu of XLv.X.

I suspect they'll be more interested if there is no intereraction with
Konfabulator or VDP, especially since quitting XL doesn't make the
problem go away.
