Contact Activites Tab

S

Sean

When I go to the Activities tab on my own personal contact, under All Items
(by default) I see all the mail from any mail folder, contacts, appointments,
tasks, recurring appointments (birthdays/anniversaries) etc.

Each other selction from the drop down box results in a view with the
corresponding selection: well at least E-Mail, Notes, and Upcoming
Tasks/Appointments.

When I go to the Contacts drop down, it says "There are no items to show in
this view."

I do not understand why all the Contacts would appear in ALL ITEMS but not
under CONTACTS which seems to be a subset of ALL ITEMS.

I am contemplating starting a new Profile if that will solve some of the
quirks I am experiencing (waiting for advice on a couple of other threads
regarding this), but I would still like to understand why this occurred.

TIA for all help and I will be happy to provide additional details if it
will be of assistance.

Well creating the new profile didn't work. I guess that makes sense since I
am running off of exchange. I only set up the new profile from one
workstation out of 3 I use to access my information but that seems like a
good enough test - the problem persists even with a new Profile, so it must
have to do with broken links. I will start researching the news groups to
find what I can on broken links first - but I understand that this supposedly
has no solution (which I find silly that you cannot do something as simple as
reconstruct an association). The fact that you can carry a file with you for
years and years to have it plagued by something so trivial without a fix is
ludacris to me.

All that aside, I am still extremely curious about this odd behavior in the
Activities window.

Any support, information, advice, etc. on all of these fronts will be as
appreciated as ever. I thank and commend you guys/gals for all you do to
help.

Well everything is working ok - it seems. My birthday appointment reminders
just started working for the ones that extended beyond my default reminder
time.

All of the information appears in my Activities window (ALL ITEMS). I had
to recreate certain contacts that apparently were not linked.

However I still do not understand why I can all my Contacts under ALL ITEMS
in the Activity pane, but when I switch the Activity pane header from ALL
ITEMS to CONTACTS, I continue to get THere Are No Items To Display In this
View - or whatever the verbiage is.

I would like to understand how this works and why. Thanks in advance for
helping to explain that to this novice trying to be an amateur.

I suppose you can try a new profile, but I think its a bug, assuming you
have contacts associated with your contact.

Sean

I think I figured it out Diane. I have not created associations between
Contacts at this point yet. When I do, they appear there (only when I create
the association from my contact). If I create it from another Contact, it
appears in their Activities/Contacts drop down list, but not in mine. It is
a little quirky but not critical as once I set up all these associations, I
will still be able to see them easily enough. Especially in Detailed Address
Cards if I show the Contacts field.

Here is the last piece of the puzzle I need to to understand the whole
thing. To reiterate my main question: Why, if there are no associations
between my contacts currently (including my own), would ALL my contacts
appear in my own contacts Activity window under the default pane 'ALL ITEMS?'

If you can clarify this behavior for me, I think I will finally be an
advanced Outlook amateur! Next up on deck... forms, lol. Thanks so much.

This is the last question I have on this, I promise. Please advise, this is
giving me OCD!! lol

Can I help with OCD? Perhaps. But my medical license is only valid in

Ok well you don't need to cure my OCD Russ but do you have an answer? LOL

How come every Contact I have ever created appears under my Personal
Contact's activity pane under ALL ITEMS even though there are no links set up
between myself and any other Contact?

P.S. everything is running smooth now Russ, methinks. :) I owe you a nice
lunch if you're ever in Tampa Bay; so long as I get to pick your brain! If
you can answer my above question, I will thrown in 2 Patron Margarita
pitchers for us.

I cannot repro your problem. "All Items" in my own personal Contact Record
simply displays all Outlook Items I created in my current profile. If you
created all of your current Outlook Contacts in your current profile, then I
would expect to see what you are seeing.

I would call it more a curiousity than a problem.

My complete Outlook Contacts record has been assembled over quite a few
versions, so I would imagine over quite a few Profiles as well.

Typically I have been careful to always Open my .pst (not import) but I
cannot confirm for a fact that I have never imported data. I have never
really used links so if links were broken, I probably wouldn't have realized
it.

So what you are saying is that all Contacts you or I or anyone has created
would appears in the ALL ITEMS list? Only "linked" contacts would appear in
the drop down CONTACTS menu.

In your opinion then it appears as if my Outlook file is working properly on
all fronts?

If you think so then it is time to back up in case I goof now, lol. Is
copying a .ost file for a backup the same as copying a .pst? I have
foolishly not backed anything up to the this point since migrating everthing
I have over to the 3rd party Exchange Server.

I deleted my old .pst file. Should I export to a .pst or just copy the .ost?

I hope you like Margaritas, it is truly the world's greatest ;0)

Again, at some point you said you migrated from a local data store to
Exchange Server, right? That would make this nearly impossible to keep track
of.
