Russ - I have seen a number of your posts and hope that you can help me.
Everyone is talking about not having contacts available through their
address book whne composing new mail - that is not my issue at all. I
will try to expalin this the best I can. I am running outlook 2003 and
Windows XP. Something went sideways yesetrday and I have spent hours
trying to figure it out. The large buttons under the folder list on the
left side of outlook are not working. In other words, I have mail,
calendar, contacts, tasks and notes. The contacts and notes buttons do
not retrieve that data anymore. When I click on either one, it stays in
the view it's in (for example I click on contacts and the calendar view
remains) There is nothing listed in the my contacts section. I have done
a cleanview switch through the command prompt and that didin't work. The
data is there and syncs with my blackberry. When I right click on
calendar or notes and open a new window the data is there as well - it
seems like something with my views and I just can't seem to figure it out.
HELP! thanks!!

Makes no sense. There is no address book in Outlook so it is impossible
for
you to have an address book in a location that is separate from your
Contacts Folder. They are the same thing! Clarify what your question is
and
what you are trying to do. Are you are trying to get some third party
address book to use Outlook?

Previous Posts In This Thread:
Contact folder "unable to display the folder"
After reformatting the disk and reloading the software (XP professional
and
Outlook 2002), the address book and contacts folder did not work
correctly.
Everything else works fine even though the old data was restored to a
different drive than the original C drive. When I clicked the contacts
folder
in the personal folder list, everything was there, but I could not use
them
in the TO data field. After research here in the discussion group, I was
able
to connect to the address book. Now everything seems to work the right way
in
the address book, but when I click on the contact folder, I see no
contacts
at all - just the message "unable to display the folder". Help!
Vague post. "When I click on the contact folder" means what exactly?
Vague post. "When I click on the contact folder" means what exactly? Where
are you doing this? I suspect you have an invalid reference to a Contacts
Folder in your address book view. Is that what you meant? If so, just
remove
it here:

I am working within Outlook.
I am working within Outlook. I have two folder lists -Hotmail (my e-mail)
with its subfolders and Outlook Today Personal Folders with its
subfolders.
Contacts is one of the subfolders in this latter list. Now I am really
confused. I followed the path below to Outlook Address Book > change, but
there is nothing to change to. I removed the "contacts" that were
connected
to the address book and went back out. Now it says there are no entries in
Outlook Address Book and when I click on the contacts folder in the Folder
list, no e-mail addresses show up either. It still says "unable to
display".
Why are my e-mail addresses not showing up here as before? All my other
personal data shows up in the folder list just the same as before I
reformatted and reloaded everything. Obviously, my Outlook.pst file is out
there intact or all the other personal data would not be here. But why am
I
not able to access the e-mail addresses in the subfolder contacts?
:
Because you haven't configured the Outlook Address Book correctly.
Because you haven't configured the Outlook Address Book correctly. Your
post
is far too vague for anyone to tell what you did let alone what you did
wrong. Just follow the well documented instructions:

Sorry you have been unable to understand my specific problem, but refering
to
the article below, I think I can now explain it better. It is step 3 in
that
article that is my problem. "Item 1. In the Folder list, select the
Contact
folder." When I do this I get the message "unable to display the folder".
Therefore, I cannot double click on a contact, because they are not
showing
up here. However the e-mail addresses do show up in the address book. How
do
I get step 3 in this article to work right?

Sounds like you aren't doing this the way you are supposed to.
Sounds like you aren't doing this the way you are supposed to. I don't see
any way you'd ever get that error messages in Folder List View. Convince
me
you are using Folder List view. You access that view from the bottom of
the
Nav Pane. Click on the icon that Says "Folder List"
If your email addresses are displaying in the address book view, what is
the
problem?

I cannot believe I am the only person on planet earth that has this issue.
I cannot believe I am the only person on planet earth that has this issue.
I
would like to have Outlook work the way it is supposed to for the ease,
convenience and efficiency. My address book is on the C drive and the .pst
file that holds the contacts folder is on the D drive. I don't know if
that
is the reason direct access to the contacts folder is blocked or not. But
that is the only thing that changed when I reformatted and reinstalled.
Maybe
it is time to get an Outlook programmer involved to locate the spot that
gives rise to this error message.

Re: Contact folder "unable to display the folder"
Just to recap this:
You click on the contact folder in question and you encounter "Unable to
display the folder" message. If that's the case, your contacts are still
available. While never having found the cause to this issue - here is a
way
to recover your contacts (there is a very remote chance that running
ScanPST
may correct the problem but generally doesn't 99% of the time in this
case).
Have seen this problem occur about a half a dozen times or so over the
years
so also going to assume that the more important objective is getting your
data back versus what caused the problem.
a) create a new contact folder
b) right click on the contact folder causing the problem (ignore
any
error message if one occurs) and <COPY> to the new contact folder - your
contacts should all be there
c) re-publish any custom forms as applicable
d) make sure you add the new contact folder to the OAB
e) once you've confirmed the contents of the new folder - delete
the
old folder
a bit more tedious since you cannot change/delete the original default
contact folder
a) create a new PST store and make it the default for your profile
(i.e. all new mail to be delivered to this new default)
b) for each of the primary default folders in the original PST
file - follow step <b> above so that you have all your data in the new PST
c) if you've created any additional folders etc - make sure you
copy
them as well to the new location
d) publish any custom forms you may have to the new folders or
personal forms lib
e) once everything is copied from the original PST - <close> it so
it's removed from the folder list
*** when we did this - a new profile was not created however,
you
may want to consider starting out with new profile and a new default PST
(Outlook Today Personal Folders) - then open the original
PST with the contact folder having the issue and follow the steps
mentioned
above
The above process never failed to recover the contact data. Hopefully the
same will be true for you otherwise have nothing else to suggest.

Thank you Karl Timmermans for your input.
Thank you Karl Timmermans for your input. Although I could not get my
Outlook
to do things exactly according to your instructions, it did get my
thinking
going in a different direction and I was able to solve the issue with your
help. In case others have this issue, I made a new contacts folder. Then
click on the address book icon>doubleclick on each e-mail contact one at a
time>file>copy to folder>new contacts folder>save and close. It would not
let
me copy all the contacts at once. Now everything works the way it is
supposed
to work - the new contacts folder and all my contacts in it. I haven't
tried
to delete the original contacts folder yet. Thanks again!
