contact list names don't show in auto-complete or when i hit ctrl-

Outlook 2007: I have a contact, for example, listed as Smith, John. But when
I type Smith I see Tom, Dick, and Harry Smith, but no John in the
auto-complete list. If I type John, I see John Jones and John Brown but not
John Smith. If I click on the To: button and type Smith, I see Tom, Dick, and
Harry, but not John. If I open Contacts, John is there with Full Name, File
As, and Display As = Smith, John and e-mail address as
(e-mail address removed). This happens with numerous contacts.

First, can anyone tell me what's wrong? Second, is there something wrong
with my changing the default Full Name, File As, and Display formats to Last,
First format?

Diane:

Not sure how to tell this, but in Contacts if I choose File | Folder |
Properties for Contacts, and select the Outlook Address Book tab, it shows
Name of Address Book = Contacts, and has a check beside Show this folder as
an e-mail Address Book - greyed out.

Again, not sure how to tell this, but the valid e-mail address is displayed
on the e-mail line in the contact record, it's underscored, and if I
single-click on it the entire address is highlighted. In other words, it acts
like an e-mail address.

If you have not yet sent a message to John Smith, his nam3e will not appear as
you type in the To field. The autocomplete feature does not access your
contacts in any way. It is merely a memory of the most recent 2,000
recipients to which you've sent mail. Those recipients may or may not be in
your contacts. If you chose a contact, then it will show up as you type. If
you enter an address directly, that will show up the next time you begin to
type and the string matches the address. If you've not used it before,
though, it won't show up.

Nothing at all. Be our guest.

From my boilerplate answer... if the checkbox is grayed out/ unclickable it
means the address book service is corrupt.

If this is grayed out...

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories or
address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't listed, add
it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it and close
then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

If you are using Outlook 2007 and the the checkbox is grayed, you'll need to
make a new profile as you can't add the Outlook Address Book service due to
a bug.
