Contact not found in contact list but displayed in mails

Hi,
I am having outlook 2003, with exchange, in my contact
list it is showing empty, where in if i compose mail, when
i type a it displays the contacts name which starts with
a, why it is not showing in the contacts?, where it is
stored, can i take backup and restore?
