Contact toolbar problems

I am beginning to use the Contact toolbar. Looks great, but all my contacts
don't show up so some of the ones I need to use are not available unless I
put in someone else and then say substitute..and get to it that way.

I cannot find any rhyme or reason as to why some names show and others do
not...the first time I get to the D's...

Ideas? Suggestions?

Hi Janice,

A couple of things: You have never updated your version of Office (I can
tell from your Entourage version number via View> Source). You need to
apply the 10.1.2, 10.1.4 (includes 10.1.3) and 10.1.5 updaters. All are
free downloads from Microsoft: <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/>

When you've finished updating, repair disk permissions: Go to Macintosh
HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select your hard disk,
then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair Disk
Permissions".

If you're still having trouble, look to Entourage first for the cause since
your contacts actually live in Entourage's Address Book and Word accesses
them from there.

Open Entourage's Address Book. One thing that sometimes "reorganizes"
Entourage's recollection is switching sorting order so try this: If you
have the Address Book set to sort by Name, click on Email Address so it
re-sorts, and then back to Name. Now, scroll down through the Address Book
and be sure it's complete and not missing any of the problematic entries.
Then switch to Word and try the Contact Toolbar again.

Another question: Does Word's Contact toolbar always choke in the same
place?

Report back once you get to this point if you're still having trouble.

You're correct. The dropdown lists only the first 100 of your contacts.
(Pretty dumb, but I suppose if you had 3000 contacts a dropdown would be
pretty unwieldy in any case.) And they're sorted by First Name, which is
even dumber. But AutoCompletion is built in: if you start typing the first
or last name of any contact all possible autocompletions should appear,
exactly as they do in Entourage message "To" fields. Type about 3 or 4
characters and the list should be just a few names.

A lot of improvements to the Address Book (accessed from Word), Data Merge
and Contact Toolbar were made in Word X. I think a few fixes were added in
SR-1 (Word 10.1.0). So you should apply the updates, as Beth says - up to
10.1.4. But you'll still get only the first 100 names by first name in the
drop down. The fun comes in clicking the other buttons to enter full
address, phone, etc. Sometimes you don't get visual feedback that you
clicked the button - but it works, as you'll see back in the doc.
