Contact view by Address Cards out of sequence

Monica

Outlook 2003
Contact Options: Name and filing order for new names default by Last First.
Name and filing for new contacts default by Company (Last,First) .
Did not find any settings in views that should net my results.
Examples:
Doe, John or (Doe, Jane) if I select on character D on side bar - returns
Doe, John.
Because of parentheses - (Doe, Jane) found elsewhere.
Same applies for company to a degree but not always this disjointed.
Microsoft (Doe, John) and Microsoft Doe, John.
I want to have my contacts available to me by selecting a character in the
tab.

To what view are you referring?
What does "filing order" mean?
What does "selecting a character in the tab" mean?
Please be more accurate and explicit.

Open Outlook 2003
You will see Mail - Calendar - Contacts - Tasks on the left pane of Outlook
Click on Contacts
This will bring up the Contacts pane
Then 2 sections appear: My Contacts and Current View
This is on the left side of the window being displayed.
Under Current view I have the Address Cards button selected.
In addition there is Detailed Address Cards - Phone List - By Category - Etc.
On the right side of the Outlook window there are buttons for 123 and then
each character of the alphabet. a - b - c - d - ...... - z
Name and filing order for new names is found by selecting Tools - Options
which are found at the upper left portion of the window File - Edit - View -
Go - Tools - Actions ...
While in options, you default to the Preferences tab.
From this tab you will see below E-mail - Calendar - Tasks - Contacts - Notes.
Under Contacts you will see a button for Contact Options and a button for
Journal Options.
Click on Contact Options. The Contact Options window appears.
Under Name and filing options for new contacts I have the first order set to
Last First. I have the how to file setting identified as Company (Last,
First).
Does this provide you with the detail you need?

So the view to which you are referring is Address Card. That view sorts by
the File As... field (ascending) unless you changed the sort order for that
view.
Outlook is simply doing what you tell it to. See what you specified for the
sort order for this view and then what you specified for the field on which
you are sorting.
